Great-Tailed Grackle
Council: Other Powers in Motion
Galrath Longvane
Galrath is not Emberwood’s. That is the first thing to understand.
He arrives when the established order is occupied with itself — when the Canopy Court is debating hedge-lines and the Council is convened over some weighty silence. He claims whatever space the realm is too busy to defend, conducts whatever business he came to conduct, and departs before anyone can formally object. His tail — longer than dignity usually permits — trails behind him like a banner no council ever ratified.
He is not malicious. He is simply indifferent to Emberwood’s structures the way a market-day crowd is indifferent to a closed sign: life moves around it.
The Canopy Court has attempted twice to formalize Galrath’s standing in the realm. Both times, Galrath had already left. There are rumors of a loose gathering somewhere beyond the south hedge — not a council, not a moot, nothing with an approved name — that operates on whatever terms Galrath found reasonable that morning. Who belongs to it shifts by season. What it decides is never announced. Its conclusions, however, have a way of becoming fact on the ground before anyone in the established order has been consulted.
Iridescent in sunlight, jet-black in shadow, Galrath reads a situation with flat yellow eyes and takes precisely what he came for. What he notes but doesn’t take is filed somewhere colder. He has been seen in conversation with Corvath Darkwing exactly once. Neither confirmed what was discussed. Both left the branch without apparent urgency, which is how Emberwood knows it mattered.
