Gareth The Particular
Gareth does not scramble. This is the first thing the other birds notice, and the thing they cannot quite explain. When the tray is crowded and the seed mix lies scattered in abundance, every other resident dips and jabs and competes. Gareth steps onto the edge, tilts his head once — a single, appraising angle — and begins to sort. Hull by hull, millet grain by millet grain, cast aside without hurry or frustration. He came for peanuts. He will find the peanuts. The rest of the tray’s offerings are not beneath him, exactly. They are simply not the point.
The Council of Black Sentinels has noted him. How could they not — he is a crow, and the Sentinels notice all crows. Corvath is said to have watched Gareth work the tray for a full three minutes without a word before departing. Whether that silence was approval, assessment, or something closer to discomfort is a matter the Sentinels have not discussed aloud. Gareth has never sought a seat and has never been formally invited. The subject has not come up. This is, itself, a kind of answer.
He is not unfriendly. He is simply occupied. The smaller birds have learned that he will not chase them — not because he is tolerant, but because chasing them would interrupt the sorting. When he finds what he came for, he takes it cleanly and goes. There is no lingering, no display, no announcement. He was here; he had a peanut; he left. The tray will remember the vacancy where he stood.
Some of the Hearthfolk have begun leaving the tray’s better corners open when they see him coming. They do not discuss this arrangement. It simply happens.
