In every crow gathering, there is a moment when laughter thins and feeding quiets-not from fear, but from attention. That moment belongs to Ashbark Crowe.

Ashbark is the one who does not eat first. He is the one whose head is always slightly turned, as if he is listening to the spaces between sounds.

Some crows call it paranoia. The Black Sentinels call it duty.

He chooses the highest available line-fence top, bare branch, gutter edge-and from there he keeps watch while the others do what they must. Not because he distrusts them, but because the world has too many teeth for a flock to forget vigilance.

When danger approaches, Ashbark does not shout. He gives the smallest, sharpest signal-the kind only crows bother to learn-and the flock reacts as if pulled by one string. Those who have watched long enough understand: the warning came before the threat was visible.

In Emberwood, that is the difference between a loss and a story that continues.
