Blink and you’ll miss her - but you’ll never forget her. Ruby Sue, a Ruby-Throated Hummingbird, is the glint of a gem at the edge of your vision, the buzz of laughter in the honeysuckle, the tiny tempest that rules the flowerbeds with a glittering iron will.
Her throat gleams like liquid rubies when caught in the sun, and her wings beat faster than gossip at a birdbath. Don’t be fooled by her size - she’s got more attitude than a jay on espresso and a flight path that resembles a fencing duel in midair.
Ruby Sue is as fiercely independent as she is maddeningly curious. She’s been known to stare down much larger birds, sip from feeders she definitely doesn’t own, and hover just inches from your nose as if inspecting your soul… before zipping off with a “hmmph.”
Tales abound of her racing dragonflies for fun, once stinging a raccoon on the nose (purely by accident, of course), and mastering the art of midair sass.
Some say she’s got a hummingbird heart. Others say she is the heartbeat of summer itself.
