Description

The Common Starling is a flashy, fast-talking visitor that often arrives in flocks, fills the air with chatter, and leaves a trail of seed hulls in its wake. Though often maligned for its aggressive nature and tendency to take over nest sites, the starling is nothing if not entertaining. Its plumage glistens with iridescent greens and purples, especially in spring sunlight, and its vocalizations are a mimic’s dream-copying other birds, car alarms, and more. In flight, starlings move with tight coordination, sometimes forming dazzling aerial displays called murmurations. In the garden, they dominate feeders, particularly suet and seed trays, but bring with them a certain theatrical charm-whether you asked for it or not.
