Great-Tailed Grackle
Council: Other Powers in Motion
Baron Blackquill
Baron Blackquill does not avoid the Watching Eye. He walks through it.
Where other birds maintain a careful distance from the great observers — pausing, retreating, measuring the gap between themselves and whatever looms large and unfamiliar — Blackquill sets no such margin. He has been seen moving at conversational range while two of the watchers stood speaking to each other, conducting their human business above him. He paid them the attention one pays to weather: present, noted, irrelevant to his purpose.
This is not the indifference of Galrath Longvane, who simply operates where no one is watching closely enough to object. Blackquill operates in the open, in plain sight, while being watched — and does not adjust. Where Galrath works around the established order by arriving when it is too busy to notice, Blackquill walks through the established order because he has decided that his presence requires no permission. The title he carries — Baron — was not ratified by the Canopy Court, not witnessed by the Council, not approved by any Moot. He arrived with it. It has not been revoked, because no one has yet found the moment to try.
His voice is a sharp instrument. Grackles carry a vocabulary wider than most birds will acknowledge — clicks, whistles, a mechanical rattle that sounds like a latch being tested — and Blackquill deploys his without apology, marking his passage the way a quill marks parchment: decisively, and with the assumption that the record matters. What the realm makes of those marks is the realm’s concern. He has already moved on.
The Council of Black Sentinels has noted him. They have not yet determined whether his boldness is a form of foolishness, a form of power, or a form of message. It may be all three. Corvath Darkwing has been observed watching Blackquill from a high branch without intervening — which in Sentinel language means the matter is still being weighed.
Oaths & Portents
Council Seat: None ratified — Other Powers in Motion – Self-Styled Baron of the Open Walk
Oath: He does not swear. He simply arrives, and the ground beneath him becomes, for that moment, his.
Portent: When Blackquill walks among the watchers without flinching, Emberwood takes note: something in the realm has grown bold enough to stop pretending it fears anything.
