Canopy Court

The Canopy Court is Emberwood’s visible rule — where crimson authority meets sunlight and thorn-law becomes decree. It is not a palace, but a perch of consensus: the highest branches, the clearest views, the place where warnings are heard first and decisions must be made before the realm can pretend it is safe.

Its matters are not grand for their own sake. They are practical:

The Court convenes beneath the Hearttree’s sunlit crown, with its Speaker holding the line between courtesy and command.

Baron Redcrest Of Emberwood — Speaker

Baron Redcrest is the realm’s arbiter in thorny matters — territorial disputes, hedge-line negotiations, the feeder truces that keep Emberwood’s daily life from breaking into something worse. He wears a black crest plume in formal gathering, the mark of the Speaker’s role. Cardinal by nature, diplomat by calling, he is roguish enough to keep the Court human and serious enough to keep it working. When his realm is threatened, the negotiations end.

Lady Emberflare — Matron Of The Hearttree

Lady Emberflare sits at the highest sunlit branch of the Hearttree and watches. She is the Court’s conscience — the voice that holds rank above eloquence, memory above argument. She carries, it is said, a single golden feather entrusted to her by Rowyn The Skyborn: a token given only to those who stand not for territory, but for legacy. When her whistle hushes even jays mid-argument, the realm has crossed from noise into consequence.

Crimson Knight — Knight-Errant

The Crimson Knight was once a fledgling called Redrick, mocked for stubborn chivalry in a realm that rewarded cleverness. He was knighted beneath the Flameleaf Tree by Lady Emberflare after the Thistle War, where he turned a scattered defense into something that held. He has patrolled Emberwood’s edges since. He does not hurry. He leaves a single crimson feather where he has stood watch — pointing toward whatever required his attention.

Sir Flamebeak — Border Knight

Where the Crimson Knight moves to resolve crises, Sir Flamebeak prevents them. He holds the hedge-lines: the thin places where yard becomes wild, where predators test margins and small birds lose their nerve. His call — I am here — is both announcement and warning. He has survived enough winters to stop making speeches about it. The border holds because he stands there.

Orlin The Crimson — Herald Of Gatherings

No council convenes in Emberwood without Orlin’s drumming. A Red-Bellied Woodpecker among cardinals, he serves as the Court’s official herald — his hammering on bark the call to assembly that tells the realm something must be decided. He carved the Crimson Accord into the Great Cedar, line by line, and holds every woodland dweller accountable to it. He is respected. He is frequently interrupting someone’s nap.

Emberwyn Of The Glade — Hearthwarden

Emberwyn guards the Whispering Glade and the nests within it. She earned her place during the Battle of Hollowroot, when invading crows threatened the glade’s peace and she led the defense. She is Hearthwarden now: keeper of lore, protector of nests, the ember of courage that does not go out in winter. When she calls at dusk and the glade feels warmer than it should, Emberwood is being blessed — or warned.

Gavren The Unbidden — Unbidden Envoy

Gavren is not seated on the Court. He is there — present when not invited, lingering near what he has not built. A Brown-Headed Cowbird, he entrusts others to raise what he leaves behind and watches from the branches with calculating calm. The Court does not welcome him. The Court does not know how to remove him. He carries a strange authority: the realm’s uncomfortable truth, delivered without apology and without cruelty.

Kaedor The Fierce — War-Caller

Kaedor holds no formal seat — he is not a cardinal, and the Court has never pretended otherwise. But his allegiance is known, and the Court is glad of it. A Blue Jay in full sapphire and frost, he serves as War-Caller: the voice that raises the alarm loud enough that even complacency wakes. He can mimic hawks to scatter rivals, holds positions through sheer volume, and bows to the Court on strategic matters. On everything else, he is his own authority.
