The Hearthfolk
Most of Emberwood goes unnamed. The Hearthfolk are those who simply live here — no seat, no oath, no standing beyond presence itself.
They are not lesser for it. The realm’s texture is theirs: the background calls at dusk, the small movements in the underleaf, the visitors who return each season not because any council summoned them but because Emberwood is where they are. They require no title to matter. The place would not be the same without them.
The named Hearthfolk are rare — naming requires witness, and most of Emberwood’s unaffiliated residents prefer the anonymity of the flock. A Hearthfolk bird who receives a name has been seen clearly enough, and often enough, that the realm has taken note. That is no small thing, even without a seat.
Hummingbirds hold a particular place among the Hearthfolk. They belong to no council and owe allegiance to nothing but the season. The Canopy Court does not claim them. The Hearthroot Moot does not count them among its own. They arrive when the nectar calls and depart when it doesn’t, and Emberwood is richer for every day they spend here.
